David Lee Roth – GIVE IT UP!

I was SO psyched for the Van Halen concert all day only to be let down after watching David Lee Roth. What a disappointment he was last Friday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City!  Eddie, Alex and Wolfgang were rockin’ but Dave, it’s time to hang up the mic buddy!

I understand we all age but Dave is too old to tour.  He may have done one kick but the rest of the time he would shuffle across the stage like a fairy!  Also, during one of the songs he FORGOT THE WORDS! He even looked at Eddie and said “I forget the fuckin’ words dude” and laughed about it!  I looked at my brother in disbelief and was like, “He forgets the f’n words”!!  Are you that old dude that you can’t remember your own song lyrics?

Eddie did an excellent guitar solo and I noticed as they zoomed in on his hands, he was wearing his wedding band! Does he not know that he and Valerie are divorced or is he thinking there’s still hope?  Other than that he sounded awesome all night and he actually didn’t look half bad.  His hair was cut short, as was Dave’s and he looked healthy.  Healthier than he has in a long time anyway.

I think the best songs that were performed were “Little Dreamer”, “Jamie’s Cryin’” and “Hot for Teacher”.  Unfortunately a good amount of my time was standing in line for over 20 minutes waiting to get a beer!! That was pathetic! Waiting that long each time for a beer!  So I ended up missing “Mean Street” which is one of my favorite songs but I could hear it and again, David didn’t sound that great so I figured I didn’t miss much.

Towards the end of the concert, David Lee Roth came out on stage and explained how the song “Ice Cream Man” came about which I found pretty amusing.  He also brought out what I guess is one of his favorite toys, the huge blow up microphone which he seems to get a lot of enjoyment from.

Maybe it was me but I felt like Wolfgang, Eddie Van Halen’s son was always looking over to Eddie for approval or something. I noticed Eddie never looked over at him.  Finally during the song “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘bout Love” Wolfgang strolled over to Eddie and they sang back up together and smiled at each other so, I guess everything was fine.  I wondered what kind of relationship they have always being together on the road and probably never getting a break from one another.

At the end of the concert David was all over the stage and the way it was set up, he could walk all around out in front of the audience.  That’s when I noticed it was set up in an S shape.  The thought that kept running through my head was that subconsciously the band was wishing Sammy Hagar was on stage rather than David Lee Roth!

Come back Sammy, Van Halen needs you!!
