Liz Lacy Fluck :: Listen
To say that today's young moms live in a different time than our mothers did would be a huge understatement. When my mom had her children, there were loads of other mothers close by at home with their children. When you were out playing in the yard or taking a walk, you would run into these stay-at-home moms (Although, I don't think they were actually called that at the time, since almost everyone was a stay at home mom 40 years ago!).

When I became a stay-at-home mom, it felt like I was the only one. I had this beautiful baby, Ryan, but no one with whom I could hold a conversation. I had been a teacher for seven years before I had my son, and all of my friends were still back at work living their professional lives. It felt quite pathetic that I had to go out and find a moms  group to join just to have someone to talk to. Talk about feeling like a loser!

But, it was the best decision I could have made! Here was a whole club full of women in the same boat as me. And they wanted (and needed) to talk about poopy diapers and sleep schedules and all that other stuff new moms can't discuss with their friends from "before baby days". These women actually didn't get that glazed over look in their eyes when both funny and gross birthing stories were told! I was thrilled!

Deep Creek Divas happened because during one of those moms group conversations, I realized I was feeling the need to "get out of Dodge"! I had been a stay-at-home mom for almost a full two years and in that time, I had never spent one night without a baby. I was not alone! Lots of other moms wanted some time away, too. We realized the only way we could get this break was to just take it. Which is exactly what we did!

Our first trip was in March of 2002 and we had a group of eight women go that year. The group has changed a bit over the years, larger some years (one year we had 23 women in a huge house!), but two of us have been away all seven years (You go, Skippy Crissy!). Some years we have gone snow tubing at nearby Wisp Ski Resort, some years we have cooked, most years we have gone out for dinner at least one night, and all years we make sure to have a hot tub and lots of libations!

This group of friends I have made through that moms group almost seven years ago have proven to be the backbone of my support system as a mother, wife and woman. I am so fortunate to have them all in my life! Here's to the DIVAS!

(Deep Creek Divas takes its name from our retreat...Deep Creek Lake located in Western Maryland)
