The Real World... :: Listen
“The Real World Threw Up All Over Us: How twentysomethings are coping with the recession,” By Emily Bazelon Is an article on www.slate.com where the author interviewed precocious young professionals who whine about not being able to afford luxury under the sun. One even quips about her starter condo, while another discussed not getting as much financial assistance from parents. Oh please! These kids need a dose of reality and to know that they haven’t really been affected by the economy. Sure, jobs are a little scarce, as are loans, but that’s not so bad. Twentysomethings did not lose any money from their retirement funds. Most of them don’t even have 401(k)s yet, and if they do, they only had time to accumulate little money in them. They go on about debt they accrued in the last few years. Gee, didn’t we realize that wasn’t a bright idea at the time? They discuss income and career assumptions they made about success, which is not happening so fast anymore. These kids had unrealistic expectations given they grew up in bustling times and probably can’t remember the last real recession in the early 80s. They need to stop whining and talk to their grandparents, who survived and even thrived during the Great Depression. More than economic rescue, these kids need a dose of perspective and gratitude.
