Interview

Tom Szaky
This is Mayzee with Myalmuniwebsite.com. Today I'm interviewing Tom Szaky, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of TerraCycle, producer of the world's first product made from and packaged in waste. Since its debut in 2004, TerraCycle has emerged as a model of eco-capitalism and has grown between 300 and 600 percent annually. Born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1982, Tom immigrated from Hungary to Holland and then in 1989 from Holland to Toronto, Canada. At 14, he started his first business, a Web designed company called Flight Design, which employed three associates and earned its young proprietor a five-figure income. Even while in secondary school, Tom was active in community service and philanthropy. As a third-year student, he cycled solo from Toronto to Vancouver to raise $4,000 for an environmental organization setting a national speed record of 21 days. Tom came to the United States in 2001 when he matriculated at Princeton University. In 2002, he took a leave of absence to dedicate himself full-time to starting TerraCycle, which began as a two-man outfit in the crowded basement of an old office building on the Princeton campus. His new book called Revolution in a Bottle traces the first five years of the Company and is a most-read for anyone interested in understanding the new synergy between business and the ecology.
