Healthy Habits :: Listen

Time is precious and no one has much of it, but finding a few minutes to workout is beneficial to everyone's health. There's a new trend in fitness that uses old methods and movements and combines them with short, intense bursts of cardio to make a workout that is fast and effective. One program, called Art Of Strength blends many exercise philosophies. It is designed to boost metabolism and not get boring for participants, who switch activities every 45 seconds.

Many of the exercises are similar to labor that was given up years ago. There is the sandbag squat, where each person lifts a heavy sandbag over alternating shoulders while squatting down, mimicking yard work. The rope exercise is similar to a task completed on a farm, with thick, heavy ropes that exercise the arm and shoulder muscles. AOS was designed to help women prevent injury. One exercise is pretty close to juggling a small child on one hip and a bag of groceries in the other arm.

The method keeps people hopping from one station to another, with an increased heartbeat. Personal trainer Susan Rosner, who has trained in AOS, said women need to rethink exercise and move to something that gets results quicker. She also teaches student "High Intensity Interval Training," an exercise that she said is proven to burn nine times more fat than regular cardio.  At the tail end of a session, a trainer leads participants in four minutes of cardio work, which creates a lack of oxygen in the body and speeds up the metabolism.

It's good for the body, she said, and it can be fun to go from jumping jacks to jogging in a short, intense burst. Another common trait in this trend is that they are offered in classes so people get a sense of camaraderie. That helps keep people on track because they are accountable to a workout buddy.
